'The Claw' 2021, granite

Invertebrates of the Sea

Thomas Berger about his ‘Organic Style’ art work:

“Since the beginning of my sculpting endeavor I aimed at organic shapes and the inclusion of eroded surfaces. At one point one of my early customers asked if I knew that I did ‘Wabi-Sabi’. I did not, but researching this Japanese art aesthetic revealed that I did in fact have a similar concept: Aiming at imperfection, at a non-industrial appearance, revealing age and erosion as traces of history. As a fossil collector in my childhood, I am quite conscious of the age of life on earth, and that is expressed in these eroded looking sculptures - as well as the awareness that all life is vulnerable and perishable.”
