The small world consists of a roundish rock boulder to which I added life in form of relief carvings. The birds are polished bas-reliefs, the fish are gold-leafed on a wave-background. A woodland edge is the home of a variety of forest animals, including wild boar, deer, bear, fox and otter. The top of the rock forms a mountain background, adding depth to the relief forms. ‘Small World’ is located at the bike trail in Newburyport /Ma
The work is carved from a two-colored stone: light colored granite on top is used for the houses, and the layer of black below evokes the idea of a narrow base, or an island.
The doors of the houses lead to nowhere, a metaphor for the difficulty one can have in life to find or establish a true and safe home.
